Infrastructure Repairs in Chewelah Require a Planned Power Outage
Spokane, Wash. Nov. 5, 2018: Avista’s 1,048 electric customers in Chewelah and the surrounding area will experience a disruption in service starting Thursday, Nov. 15 at 11:00 p.m. and ending at 6:00 a.m. on Friday Nov. 16. The planned power outage is required for an Avista line crew to perform further repairs to a wood power pole damaged during a recent pole fire on Oct. 25.
Pole fires are rare, but they can occur when dirt and grime build up on the insulators used to attach electric power lines to wood power poles. The moisture in the air combines with the dirt on the insulators to allow an electrical short circuit, which can cause a fire. The short circuit trips a switch, cutting power to the lines, much like the fuses or breakers in a house the tripped switch causes an outage. Stay far away if you see a pole fire and dial 911 and Avista.
Avista is continually updating equipment and infrastructure to increase the safety and reliability of their system.
“We understand that being without power creates hardships and we’re committed to restoring your power as quickly and safely as possible,” said Cesar Godinez, Avista’s manager of operations for the greater Colville area. “We will perform the work during non-peak hours to avoid further inconvenience to our customers.”
Avista customer service representatives have a variety of resources available to assist customers in need. Customers who have questions or concerns can contact Avista at (800) 227-9187 and reference outage number 9185.
